23. Straight through the Sierra

The fork in the highway came too quickly for Ervey. He had been there before, but that Monday he had to be reminded where he was.
“Which one?” asked Lilo, “high or low?”
“What?” Ervey said. He looked to the left and saw the newer wider surface heading to the toll highway. Straight ahead he saw the narrow old road leading to the mountains.
“Do I turn right or go straight?” asked Lilo.
“On the tool road there’s only the 20 kilometer customs stop in La Mula, and over the sierra there’s Coyame del Sotol as well as the customs stop. Right?” said Ervey, checking is recollection of the two roads.
“Sí,” Lilo, “the sierra is less traffic but there are more settlements.”
“I’ve never been through Coyame,” said Ervey, “is it safe, you know, for a truck like this.”
“Sure,” said Lilo, “and more scenic. We can stop in Coyame and eat asadero cheese and bean burritos for lunch.”
“Hmmm,” was the only response.
The decision quickly left his hands. Lilo kept straight through the junction.
“There it was,” said Lilo, “want me to go back?
“No. Let’s keep going. At least I’ll get a chance to know Coyame,” said Ervey.
The road quickly began to climb, exposing expansive vistas all around them. Ervey noticed that they were alone on the road. Once the toll road was out of sight, he saw no vehicle coming or going. There were no horizons. In every direction there were only distant mountains, no telephone poles, no smoke plumes, no sign at all that humans had ever been there.
Lilo looked over at Ervey and saw looking in every direction as if he wanted to run.
“What’s up, cousin?” he asked in a cheerful voice.
Ervey shook his head and looked back at the road.
“Doesn't what's happening in Aldama bother you? It’s getting so everything is getting invaded by the narcos and the violence they bring,” he said.
“It didn't have to be brought in. It's always has been here if it's your turn. If not, it makes not difference,” said Lilo.

Ervey exhaled.

"How much longer until Coyame?" he asked.

"Two hours at this pace," said Lilo.
